October Columbus Circle Athlete of the Month
As one of his coaches, I am proud to say Nick To is the Columbus Circle member of the month. His work ethic and desire to listen and learn is second to none. He consistently comes in early and stays late to work on his skills.
He not only takes advantage of CrossFit classes but Olympic weightlifting and mobility as well. His work ethic, participation in the community and encouragement of others make him a member all CrossFit boxes strive to have.
— Coach Brandon
How/when did you get involved in CrossFit? What has motivated you to stick with it?
To be honest, I was absolutely terrified of barbells and heavy weights before I started CrossFit. It took me a year to build up the courage to even take a class. My desire to conquer that fear kept me coming back. I have been addicted ever since.
What do you enjoy most about being a member at EVF?
EVF has a wonderful, diverse community that enjoys getting together in an underground room to lift heavy things and move. It is an exceptionally positive and accepting environment. That aside, the coaches are on point and programming is terrific.
Do you remember your first workout? Looking back how did it go?
My first WOD was Karen (150 wall balls for time). It was awful. During the workout I definitely decided I was never coming back. Everything burned! Then I finished and felt that post workout rush and all I wanted to do was to go again.
What were your goals when you first started? How have they changed?
Starting out I wanted to learn how to clean. I was obsessed with them. It took me weeks to even get the basics of the movement. Since then, my short-term specific goals change with the seasons. My long-term goal has always been to show up, work hard and be better than yesterday.
How have you grown in that time — health, body, mind, etc.?
I have come to understand my body a lot better and feel good about going to the gym, which has made me more confident in life. I often find myself thanking CrossFit in my daily life like when I climb a 6-floor walk up without devolving into a panting heap or when I carry grocery bags home without my hands cramping.
Favorite lift and WOD?
Cleans and anything involving handstands.
Least favorite movement and workout?
Thrusters, anything and everything with thrusters. Yes Fran, I’m talking about you in particular.
What drives you through the door each day?
When it comes down to it, I enjoy being in the space and moving. Also nothing beats that high after a tough workout.
Do you have any advice for new members?
Show up.
Have a goal.
Remember to rest.
What do you hope to achieve in the coming year?
I hope to learn and practice better Olympic lifting technique and to take time to prioritize mobilization.
