The Open is done, so now what?

By: 3 Comments

Good afternoon folks,

The open is officially over! What an amazing 5 weeks it has been. Lots of achievements, so many PR’s and even more so a greater sense of community has been forged.

All in 5 weeks. We tried to tell you it’s not about going to regionals, it’s not about your scores, its not about who’s the best in the box. Its about people coming together to do this thing we all love and gaining a sense of pride in that work. Together.

Bravo EVF.  So many amazing moments to name all but two stand out to me the most.

14.1
Katherine getting her first double under after spending the entire workout trying to get one. The crowd erupted as she was surprised she even accomplished it. She struggled for 8 mins and then, her accomplishment was achieved. That was her victory and we all got to share in her moment. Amazing. Breathtaking. The Open.

You all fought so bravely through this one. It was probaly the hardest workout I have ever done in the open. To say it was brutal is an understatement. Daniels 37 mins was to me by far my favorite moment in the open.

He never quit, although he will tell you he looked at the stairs a few times and had thoughts about running away (I totally would’ve understood if he did). He did not make that choice. Instead the decision he made was to continue and fight through the pain to finish until the last rep was complete.

The entire crowd came to his side and backed him the entire way. When you talk about community, support, encouragement and all of those things gyms claim to be about we lived it that moment. I fought back the tears as I did my best to give him all the support he needed. I looked up to see everyone cheering, spreading encouragement some like myself on the verge of tears.

It was one of those moments where you knew in someone else’s plight we would all came together and rally for him. We were all in that fight with him and would support him to the end. We all knew his pain and we also got to see his courage and determination. Raw guts. Emotions were high and no one would leave till he finished.

The moment he jumped over the bar and completed his last burpee, it was a sense of pride through the crowd. As a coach, I was so relieved but as a friend a huge sense of respect and admiration. This workout was as a tough of a fight as he had probally ever been in and he won. His victory. We all shared in it with him. Emotional. Nail biter. The open.

Now what?

Well I hope you took my advice and took this week to deload or take it easy. The programming was not as intense as in past months as we completed our 5 week cycle of intensity as well as most of us took the time to deload.

We will now look to retool and regain some balance in our training. The focus will shift to creating a strucural balance in each of you. By shifting focus towards creating a stable base of strength and learning to have better propeoception (a sense of ones own body in space) this will help each athlete to slowly close the holes in each’s fitness and improve upon there overall skill sets.

You will see more accesory work within the strength portion, more core (mid line stability) work and as always our work capacity workouts (met-cons) will feature more skill, weightlifting, and mono structural combinations. We will also see a return to running as the weather now allows us to go outside more.

The idea is to become a better overall well-balanced athlete. At EVF we pride ourselves in our balanced and varied programming. As you can tell by the open they through the kitchen sink at us. The idea is to always prepared for the unknowable. Whether thats lifting, running, gymnastics etc. You will be prepared for it all.

We are also excited to announce that our Performances classes will begin next week.
Tuesday and Thursday at the east side at 8:30pm will be the time slot for our new programming.

Stay tuned for that post.

Out door 360 classes will begin this month as well. We are also looking to do some other programing mobility, yoga, run club etc

Our Healthy eating and fitness challenge will begin on Monday.

All amazing things.

Awesome job to all. Even for those of you who were not registered for the open still came in did the workouts along with your fellow members then stayed and cheered. BRAVO! Love you guys. Thanks for making this job so damn awesome.

EVF we have only just begin to tap the level the awesomeness we plan to reach. Continue to hold the values of community. Continue to welcome in our new members and make them feel that they belong. Continue to participate and support our events. Continue to support one another. The best has yet to come.

That beer was the best thing Jamie will taste. She must first have to wake up.

Kims infamous pony tail is not the thing to watch here. Look at the support she has around her as she guts out the final few reps. Community forged.

  1. Man what an awesome group of people to be associated with. I’m so proud.

In other news, what am I doing wrong that I don’t have Handstand Jay’s body?

  2. Few things..

-I definitely cried at the end of Daniel’s performance
-Despite my lack of sleep Friday night’s thinking of the Saturday Open WODs, I’m going to miss it.
-Corporate America does NOT appreciate my ponytail. The stares I got today were cruel.

  3. Thanks coach! That was probably the toughest 37:58 of my life and I definitely wouldn’t have finished if not for everyone’s support (mostly because there was no where to hide at that point).

The Open was such an amazing experience. Seeing the growth of our community as we supported each other as we struggled through these insane WODs was such an incredible experience week after week. EVF rocks!!
