UES Athlete of the Month – Tim Claes
“Tim is incredibly dedicated and motivated. He spends time before and after class doing extra skill work, handstands, and mobility, and is always looking for new ways to improve. He takes constructive feedback and applies it immediately. He’s made huge strides in his squat positioning, kipping technique, and general body awareness since starting out, and continues to get stronger every week.” – Coach Jenna
How/when did you get involved in CrossFit?
I had been curious and thinking about it for a while before I actually pulled the trigger, which was in January of 2019. I finally decided to make fitness a priority and get away from traditional gyms where I always worked out alone. I also wanted to get out of my comfort zone, and EVF happened to be the closest gym to my apartment. It was a no-brainer and one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Do you remember your first workout? How was it?
My first workout was a 360 class, and I remember thinking it was exactly what I was looking for in a workout. I don’t remember what my first CrossFit workout was specifically, but everything was new so it was very humbling to say the least – snatches especially.
What were your goals when you first started? How have they changed?
When I first started, I just wanted to establish consistent workout habits and take advantage of the coaches’ knowledge as much as possible. I was able to make that happen early on, and about five months ago I decided I was going to make handstands a part of my life. Progress has been slow but steady and I love it.
How have you grown in that time — health, body, mind, etc.?
I’ve grown so much in just about every way. A lot has happened in life outside of the gym, and having EVF as a place that I can go to better myself and be in a supportive, friendly atmosphere has really meant a lot to me this past year. As far as fitness is concerned, I’ve gotten exponentially more comfortable with all of the movements, and I’m lifting weights I didn’t think were possible for me.
What do you enjoy most about CrossFit?
Getting feedback and encouragement from the coaches and fellow athletes.
Favorite lift and WOD?
I love bench press, and also any workout with handstand push ups.
What about your least favorite?
Anything that involves thrusters.
What motivates you?
I’m motivated by the desire to see what I can get my body to do, as well as keeping it in proper working order for as long as I can.
Do you have any advice for new members?
Keep going, enjoy the process, and the work will pay off.
What do you hope to achieve in the coming year?
A solid freestanding handstand and handstand walk is number one, and a muscle up would be great!
