How/when did you get involved in CrossFit?
January 2017. The year started off with a lot of losses for me family and relationship wise. I also knew I was going to be starting school to become an EMT that April, so I needed to be stronger — mentally and physically. I kept seeing the ads on Instagram and Facebook and my friend Julia had mentioned I would like it. Back then it seemed a little intimidating, but I needed a big change in my life. I met Julia, saw the space and some friendly faces and was SOLD. 🙂

Do you remember your first workout? How was it?
I just signed up and before my On-Ramp started Julia suggested I should take a 360 class that night. I was so nervous, I didn’t know what to expect, my heart was beating through my chest, and I just knew everyone was tough and in amazing shape. It was with Coach Ryan and I remember a bunch of burpee box jumps and wall balls. I thought, “Bloody hell, I have a lot of work to do.” I wanted to cry and throw up at the end, but I was excited to come back for more. I was definitely hooked.

What were your goals when you first started? How have they changed?
Honestly, when I first started my goal was to be in shape to be able to lift patients safely and without injuring myself and to be good at something else other than Pilates and dance. It has definitely changed. Now I take CrossFit much more seriously. I love the challenges of these lifts, so now I work to perfect and improve these movements. I want to lift heavy. I want to hang with the “big dogs.”

How have you grown in that time — health, body, mind, etc.?
I’m in much better shape, much more confident in myself and my decision making. I feel good from the inside out. I’m eating well, have lots of energy and am much happier. I just move better in life. It’s always good to when your clients notice a difference in your body and mentality!

What do you enjoy most about CrossFit?
The challenge. There is always room for improvement and to add a more weight. PRs are always exciting. The community is amazing. I have met some incredible friends here. The way everyone lifts each other up, encourages and motivates. Everyone gives their all. How can you have a bad day when you get to be around these people? We all get through it together. No one is left alone. It’s really inspiring. It’s my family away from home.

Favorite lift and WOD?
My favorite lifts are definitely deadlifts and cleans. I like Angie, DT and Randy and anything with rowing in it.

What about your least favorite?
I don’t really think I have a least favorite. I’m not a huge fan of thrusters and running, so maybe a WOD with a ton of those.

What motivates you?
Being better and improving on my weaknesses; being stronger and faster and functional. I’m very competitive with myself, so I always want to push more. Everyone at Columbus Circle motivates me daily.

Do you have any advice for new members?
Take the time to learn and progress. Don’t be afraid! Jump in — you’ll be glad you did. Enjoy the process, have fun, work hard. Learn new skills, and apply and believe in yourself. Listen and ask questions. It’s not always easy so don’t get frustrated. We have the best coaches, and they will help you achieve your goals.

What do you hope to achieve in the coming year?
To constantly improve and lift heavier. Snatches are my kryptonite, so I’m determined to nail those. Also pull-ups and handstand push-ups! I would also like to compete one day.
