Athlete of the Month

Thomas is one of those people who can, day in and day out, come in and put in the work. He’s always cheery and has a joke to tell but gets after it, even with movements that aren’t his strong suit. Thomas is very coachable, always goes up in weight when asked, and is the first to share when equipment is sparse.

How/when did you get involved at EVF? What has motivated you to stick with it?
I first tried out EVF on ClassPass. I had just moved back to New York from DC, and wanted to try out fitness options while I got the rest of my life sorted. As it turns out, EVF seems to be the only thing I’ve figured out so I kind of have to keep it up.

What do you enjoy most about being a member at EVF?
Between harassing the staff about music choices and showcasing my clearly staggering athleticism, I’ve connected with some great people between staff and members who enjoy working out as much as I do. Positive energy, smiles and laughs are as essential in life as in a workout — life is hard enough already.

Do you remember your first workout? Looking back how did it go?
I do my best to work out wildly hungover as much as possible, so I can’t say I remember, but I seem to have survived.

What were your goals when you first started? How have they changed?
I’m essentially trying to stave off becoming a middle-aged Armenian man shaped like a refrigerator for as long as possible.

How have you grown in that time — health, body, mind, etc.?
EVF has helped me re-access the feeling of being truly pushed outside of my comfort zone, where it’s not about thinking so much as just doing.

Favorite movement and workout?
As much as I love cardio dementia, I had never rowed before. That has become a real favorite.

Least favorite movement and workout?
Running is the devil’s work. Also pistol squats.

What drives you through the door each day?
We’re living through a rough moment in the world, and I’m chronically stressed and overextended —  traveling, working, binging ice cream, etc. I’m motivated through the door each day for the much-needed chance to be part of a community, see friends, and blow off steam.

Do you have any advice for new members?
Be open to learning and improving technique. There are lots of movements in CrossFit and 360 that will make you look like a moron. Otherwise, don’t take yourself too seriously. Forget about ego, competitiveness, whatever.  Also please bring donuts.

What do you hope to achieve in the coming year?
Mostly, I hope to master those movements that still make me look like a moron.
