Columbus Circle Athlete of the Month

By: 0

We’re happy to select Jonathan Schwartz as our Columbus Circle member of the month! One thing Jon understands is that consistency is the key to results. He’s in the box as often as he can be and has brought a laser like focus to his CrossFit training. I always see Jon before class warming up and after class, always mobilizing.

Though he has a quiet nature, Jon will always ask questions for clarity and is always open to feedback, making him extremely coachable. Among our most respectful members, Jon always says thank you after receiving coaching advice. And to boot, he’s always cheering members on at the end of their workouts.

Jon wants to know the why behind the what and it’s exciting having a member who is so engaged in CrossFit methodology. He’s a pleasure to have in class and a great example of a member who’s dedication and hard work is really paying off. Congratulations Jon!

jon2 How/when did you get involved in CrossFit? What has motivated you to stick with it?
I started CrossFit in mid May 2015 for a few reasons, the first being my dad. He has been doing CrossFit for two years and the results I have seen him experience are phenomenal. The second reason was for the instruction I knew CrossFit would provide.

Prior to CrossFit, my workout regime included doing the Insanity videos. Although Insanity was beyond challenging, I had no one coaching me on the movements and the only instruction I had was coming from a laptop screen.

What do you enjoy most about being a member at EVF?
There are so many things that make me so proud to be an EVF member. To sum it up, I would have to go with the feeling of community. Walking through the door and hearing “Hey Jonathan, how’s it going?” really gives me a sense of belonging! The instruction and advice all the coaches give and the support you receive from the other members make me so proud to be an EVF member.

Do you remember your first workout? Looking back how did it go?
I don’t remember exactly what my first workout was, but I definitely remember the feeling. I was beyond exhausted. I remember calling my dad right after class and telling him all about the struggle. I couldn’t wait to get back into the box and see myself improve from day to day.

What were your goals when you first started? How have they changed?
When I first started, my main goal was to do at least three CrossFit classes a week. Now I try to come in a minimum of five times per week. Currently, my main goal is trying to improve my posture and regain my mobility. I have been working extremely hard during class and attending LJ’s mobility class every week.

How have you grown in that time — health, body, mind, etc.?
The results I have experienced have been unbelievable! I feel more alive, healthy and alert. I have seen definite physical changes, but I have also seen other changes. I feel CrossFit has helped me evolve into a stronger person, both physically AND mentally.

Looking at the WOD written on the board when I walk through the door at the beginning of each class still makes me cringe. However, knowing that I WILL complete and finish it to the best of my ability reassures me that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to do. This attitude has transferred into my daily life, both professionally and socially.

Favorite lift and WOD?
My favorite lift is definitely the clean. As for WODs, I would have to say I enjoy any workout that has kipping pull-ups.

Least favorite movement and workout?
Definitely the overhead squat. My mobility is not all there yet, so this movement is always a struggle. As for my least favorite workout, the award has to go to “The Gobbler.”

What drives you through the door each day?
Knowing that I will be a tiny bit better than yesterday. Feeling and seeing myself getting better each day is truly an addicting feeling.

Do you have any advice for new members?
Never get discouraged. Everyone has to start somewhere. Everyone at EVF is on your team and is going to cheer you on and support you as you make the journey to a more fit and healthy lifestyle.

What do you hope to achieve in the coming year?
I have a few goals for 2016. My main goal is to gain more mobility. I want to be able to perform double unders to the ability where I can do them in the WOD. And finally, I want to perform my first muscle-up.
